A veterinarian's story

We spoke with Dr. Aoki, director of Aoki Animal Hospital in Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, which specializes in treating urinary stones and kidney disease in dogs and cats, about the "My Pet's Urine Record" system proposed by Nyampling.
What is "My Child's Urine Record" proposed by Nyampling?

Nyampling lets you see your pet's pee status at a glance, so you can easily record it by just taking a photo. Nyampling believes that by regularly checking your pet's pee at home, you can easily notice changes in the urine and may even detect illnesses early. Getting your pet used to collecting urine at home while they're still young and healthy will help you prepare for when you need to.

Q1: Please tell us your thoughts on nyanpling® .

We asked not only cat owners but also dog owners to try out samples of Nyanpling®. They gave it positive reviews, saying that it was "easy to collect urine." I think the size and shape of the urine collector are just right.

Q2: What are the recommended points of nyanpling®?

If you can collect urine from your cat at home, even if it's just the urine, it will be possible to bring it to the veterinary clinic and perform a urine test on nervous cats who hate going outside or going to the clinic.

Q. About pH test paper

The properties of urine change over time. I think it's a good idea to be able to check fresh urine immediately after urination with pH test paper. A "weakly acidic" pH value is considered good, but there are also urinary diseases such as calcium oxalate that are not affected by pH. I think it's important for owners to know their cat's pH value when they are normally healthy, when they are unwell, or when they have a urinary tract disease.

Q. Regarding photo records

Nowadays, you can take clear photos even with a smartphone, so it's a good idea to take photos of the color of the urine immediately after urination, the color of the pH test paper, and the amount of urine. As the color and properties of urine inevitably change over time, a "urine record" taken immediately after urination may be helpful for the examination. After collecting urine at home, follow your veterinarian's instructions and bring it to the veterinary clinic as soon as possible to have a urine test done once every 3 to 6 months.

Some owners may find it difficult to collect urine depending on their cat's personality or the shape of the litter box.

However, I think it's a good idea for owners to know what color their cat's urine is normally and how much it is by collecting urine regularly at home. However, over time, crystals may precipitate and normal changes may occur in urine. Also, the accuracy of urine may be inferior to that of urine collected at a hospital (depending on the method). Don't be overconfident, and even if your cat is healthy, you should have it checked at the hospital regularly every 3 to 6 months.
